Foundation Fieldbus — Connectivity and Diagnostics

Diagnosing the physical layer, knowing and troubleshooting typical site issues — hands-on training for the engineers who keep fieldbus segments healthy in the plant.

Course Synopsis

This program gives engineers the theoretical foundation to understand fieldbus, then uses hands-on tools, demonstration kits and real-world issues to teach the skills needed in the field. It provides the knowledge and confidence for engineers to tackle their daily tasks on their own — from the operation principle of Foundation Fieldbus to diagnosing a segment and troubleshooting the issues typically found on site.

Who Should Attend

A fairly technical program, designed mainly for engineers and people with hands-on field experience:

  • Instrument Engineers
  • DCS Engineers
  • Maintenance Engineers

Hands-on Throughout

Every topic is taken as far into practice as possible — application photographs, products, and the actual products on a fully operational demonstration kit — so engineers deepen their knowledge and can apply it to an existing plant.

What You Will Learn

With a balanced mix of theory and practice, participants will gain:

  • A good understanding of the Foundation Fieldbus physical concept: its operation principle and the actual products in use.
  • Detailed hands-on experience on Foundation Fieldbus.
  • A sound understanding of the critical factors affecting the health of a fieldbus segment.
  • The ability to identify the typical issues that arise in the plant, and how to diagnose them.

Theory & Practice

Course Outline

Day 1

Fieldbus Basics

  • Introduction
  • Fieldbus topologies, specifications and components
  • Introduction of the demo kit

Diagnostics

  • The troubleshooting tools: FBT-6 and F809F
  • Measured parameters — physical layer signal details such as noise and signal amplitude
  • Simulation of faults, troubleshooting with the FBT-6

Intrinsic Safety

  • Principles of intrinsic safety
  • Q&A

Day 2

Surge Protection

  • Lightning severity in Malaysia and protection using the right surge protection devices (SPD)
  • Introduction of the SPD demo kit

Installation Practice — From 4–20 mA to Fieldbus

  • Lessons learned: DCS layout, control room cabinets, field enclosures and wiring
  • Typical installation issues and how to diagnose them

Troubleshooting & Assessment

  • Troubleshooting tools (FBT-6/9/10/11/12) and online diagnostics (F809F)
  • A refresher on measured parameters (physical layer signal details)
  • Discussion of the questions collected in the first session
  • Theoretical assessment, answers and Q&A
